Med Review
Here is a med from a past week
Glucagon - GlucaGen
Class: Hormone
Therapeutic Action: Natural polypeptide hormone produced by alpha cells of the islets of langerhans in the pancreas. When relesed it causes a breakdown of glycogen in to glucose and inhibits the synthesis of glycogen from glucose. Both actions increase the blood levels of glucose. Also increases the heart rate and myocardial contractility and improves AV conduction in a manner similar to that produced by catecholamines. It's actions are independent of beta blockade.
Emergency Use:To increase blood glucose levels in hypoglycemic patients without IV access.
Adult Dose: 1 mg IM/SC may repeat every 5-20 mins, To Reverse the effects of a Beta Blocker OD, 50-150 mcg/kg over 1 min
Pediatric Dose: 0.03 - 0.1 mg/kg/dose every 20 mins as needed with max dose of 1 mg, To reverse the effects of a beta blocker OD, 50-150 mcg IV over 1 min.
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, but be precautious with pregnancy and that glucagon only works if there are glycogen stores in the liver.
